As Boston’s market welcomes back its traders after what, for some, has been a three-month lay-off, the national body that represents the sector has said markets will be at the heart of the UK’s recovery.

David Preston, Chief Executive of the National Association of British Market Authorities, says markets can be the new saviour of our high streets as people change their shopping habits.

The pandemic has seen an increasing desire for fresh local produce. A new campaign – #MyMarket – has been launched to celebrate Britain’s markets as the centre of the shopping experience customers have shown they want.

“Markets have been the beating heart of communities for centuries, and the recent pandemic has seen people understand their real value,” David said.

“Markets are reinventing themselves to meet consumer expectations. They are the perfect place to trial a new business idea or product, with little capital commitment and the ability to expand and diversify.

“Customers using markets during the pandemic have universally praised the experience. They have enjoyed shopping at open air markets and have rediscovered that the added value of using markets makes sense for their local economy.”

Cllr Chelcei Sharman, portfolio holder for town centre services, said: “It is clear the market was sorely missed during lockdown, and it’s heartening to see the traders re-joining us, providing our town with the business it deserves.

“Our Historic Market has around 24 traders on a Wednesday and 26 on a Saturday, which in itself is wonderful to think on a Wednesday it has 24 additional shops in Bargate Green Car Park and 26 on a Saturday throughout the Market Place.

“The benefit of our outdoor market means that traders are in a fantastic position to come back from the coronavirus lockdown better and stronger than ever, and we are hopeful we can rebuild the trade by supporting our traders.”

We as a council are offering half price rent until 31st August 2020 for all our Market Traders and are still offering new traders 4 markets for free when they have traded and paid for 4 markets, this is so we can ensure the continued market business we all love and visit.”
