New signs have been placed along key roads in the borough as part of a campaign to crackdown on littering.
Boston Borough Council is working on this initiative as restrictions start to lift from Covid and people start to go back into their daily routines which include shopping, commuting to work, school and so on.
Since September 2019 the council have been working closely with environmental enforcement company LA Support Ltd to help tackle environmental crimes in Boston. These officers will continue to patrol the borough daily to cut down on environmental crime and increase environmental awareness. If you’re caught committing a littering offence – including cigarette butts and chewing gum you’ll be given an on the spot fixed penalty notice charge (fine).
Leader of the Council, Cllr Paul Skinner, has recently installed signage across the Borough with Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Cllr Richard Austin, who designed the signs displaying the message ‘Thank you for taking litter home’ and ‘Together Boston Borough will be litter free’.
The signs have been cited at different locations coming into the town and will be moved regularly to alternative locations to reach highest impact.
Cllr Skinner said: “Residents have taken to social media over these past few months and made it very clear to us that they are sick of this kind of selfish behaviour from people who think that they can litter, blighting our town and countryside.
“We already put a lot of resource into tackling the issue and these new litter signs give a clear message to those who decide to drop litter that it’s totally unacceptable and simply will not be tolerated.
“This is about taking back our streets for the vast majority of honourable people who dispose of their rubbish properly either by taking it home or placing in a provided street litter bin.
“The majority of people already know that littering is a criminal offence.
“I really do hope these signs will make the litterers think twice before dropping anything and encourage them to do the right thing by taking their waste home where it can be disposed of properly, or using a street litter bin provided on their travels.”
We have recently written to all residents telling them about the new twin stream recycling service being introduced in the borough which included a line stating that no side waste will be accepted with any bin from w/c April 26.
Cllr Yvonne Stevens, Portfolio Holder for Waste Services, said: “We intend to suspend the decision to stop collecting side waste from household bins and we will review this when the new paper and card collection service is embedded. I hope this will give residents time to adjust to the new service once introduced and I would like to thank all residents for working with us on this going forward”.
Please note that no side waste will be accepted with the new purple-lidded bins due to the rules around what the waste processors will take but we will continue with current side waste collection policies until further notice.
