The Mayors chosen charities will receive a donation from Boston Borough Council, gained from the recycling of reclaimed metals removed after cremations.

This year we have raised the sum of £4,168.42, which will be donated to the Mayors appeal fund. This fund supports the two nominated charities Macmillan Cancer Support and St Barnabas Hospice and they are directly involved in caring for people with terminal illness.

Since we started doing this, we have now raised a total of £17,625. The metals, which are mostly used in coffin construction and some from surgical implants, such as replacement joints, have to be separated from ashes following cremations. The crematorium then has a duty to dispose of this residual metal waste in the most environmentally friendly way possible, and it has joined a scheme for crematoria to recycle metal. Those participating typically donate any monies raised to charities and other worthy causes.
