Local Health Priorities

Healthy Lifestyles:

Lifestyle factors such as smoking, physical activity, eating habits and alcohol consumption have a significant effect on our risk of ill health both now and later in life, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer and dementia.

In this section you will find an array of information, advice and services to support you and your family to make small changes to improve your health.

Alcohol Information

Drinking more than recommended can lead to health risks including liver problems, reduced fertility, high blood pressure, increased risk of cancer and heart attack.  For more information about this and the recommended guidelines please see the links below which will give you access to advice and tools such as the unit calculator.

Double Impact

Double Impact is available locally to support people following their recovery from drug or alcohol problems, helping them to gain new skills and qualifications, access peer support and feel part of their local community.  Support is also available for family or associates of people affected by drugs or alcohol and also for none English people.

Community Alcohol Partnership

The Boston Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) bring together local retailers and licensees, trading standards, police, health services, schools and other agencies to tackle the problem of underage drinking and associated anti-social behaviour.

Drugs Misuse

If you need help to talk about drugs with your child or have a drug problem, there is a lot of support and help available. A good place to start is your local substance misuse treatment provider, We Are With You, on 01205205028 or visit your family doctor. Alternatively, you can ring the FRANK helpline on 0300 1236600 for more information about drugs and the different options available. The confidential helpline is open every day, 24 hours a day.  Calls are free from land lines and some mobiles.

Smoking

Eatwell

A healthy balanced diet contains a variety of types of food, including lots of fruit, vegetables and starchy foods such as wholemeal bread and wholegrain cereals; some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and lentils; and some dairy foods. The two keys to a healthy diet are balancing the energy you consume with the energy you use and eating a wide range of foods to ensure that you’re getting a balanced diet and that your body is receiving all the nutrients it needs. Walking for Health

The Boston Health Walks initiative includes led-walks across the borough. Walks are available from Monday to Friday at various locations across the Borough.

A donation towards venue hire and refreshments of £1.50 is requested which can include up to 12 walks a week if required.  Walks vary from one to three miles in length, are wheelchair and pushchair friendly, take place in all weathers and there is no need for special equipment.  Everyone is welcome, whatever their level of fitness.

Vitality

Vitality is a programme of movement and exercise to music classes for the over-60s or those younger who have medical conditions which prevent them from exercising in any other way.

Vitality aims to bring about improvements in mobility, stamina, balance, posture and coordination. The classes are taken by qualified, experienced instructors and are held in villages and towns around the County, including Kirton and Old Leake.

Boston Parkrun

Boston Parkrun is held at Witham Way Country Park, Tattershall Road, Boston every Saturday morning at 9.00am. This is a FREE, weekly 5km timed run that is open to all ages and abilities.

Couch to 5k

The NHS Couch to 5K is a free nine-week running plan for people who want to be more active. It’s perfect if you’re new to running – the plan is all about starting slowly and building up gradually. For more information please refer to the link below.

Positive Futures

Positive Futures Lincolnshire is a sports and activity-based inclusion project. The programme involves sport and physical activity sessions and is open to young people aged 8 to 24, giving structure and support.

Family fitness trails are located at Witham Way Country Park, next to the River Witham, and Jenny’s Wood, off West End Road.  A variety of equipment is available for use including stride jumps, bench sit ups, chin ups and log stacks.  A great addition to a family trip out and absolutely FREE. Both sites are also cyclist-friendly, incorporating surfaced paths to explore the countryside.

There are currently outdoor gym facilities at three sites in the Boston area; Central Park, Woodville Road and Wellington Road. Central Park has twelve outdoor gym stations available including Air Walker, Cycle, Rower, Pull-up Bars, Sit Up Bench, Air Skier and Leg Press. Woodville Road play space has five outdoor gym stations including Cycle, Air Walker, Sit Up Bench and Pull Up Bars. Wellington Road play area also has a variety of outdoor gym stations available.

Boston Woods

Established 10 years ago, Boston Woods Trust now has 100 acres of woodland, parkland and meadow open for public access with good quality all-weather paths for walking and cycling.

Country Parks and Local Nature Reserve

Boston Borough Council manage two country parks – Witham Way and Havenside, both of these are also Local Nature Reserves.

Havenside Country Park and Local Nature Reserve is a great place to experience Lincolnshire’s wildlife. Located within the park is the Pilgrim Fathers’ Memorial, marking the place formerly known as Scotia Creek. Access to the site, which includes a car park and picnic area, is via the sea bank path from the main entrance near METSA, off Fishtoft Road. Alternatively it can be accessed by car via Fishtoft village: follow the brown tourist signs to the Pilgrim Fathers’ Memorial.

Witham Way Country Park is a haven for local wildlife with a mosaic of woodland, grassland and scrub. A wildflower meadow attracts bees and other pollen gatherers, and habitats created on site including a bug park are attracting butterflies and other invertebrates. Bird boxes are providing the perfect nesting sites for owls taking advantage of the natural food on offer along the river bank.  Trim trails, chin-up bars, balance beams, monkey bars and more are also available. The Wash

The Wash, shared between Lincolnshire and Norfolk, is one of the UK’s most important estuaries providing a winter feeding ground for over 300,000 visiting water birds.

Measuring approximately 20 km wide and 30 km long, The Wash opens into the North Sea with the rivers Steeping, Witham, Welland, Nene and Great Ouse flowing into it.

One You Lincolnshire supports residents of the county with making significant long-term changes to their health.

Residents in Lincolnshire who meet the criteria for the service will have free access to health coaches that support being smokefree, drinking less, eating well and moving more. The unrivalled offering is reflected in the range of free weight loss programs available. Including, Weight Watchers, Slimming World and MAN v FAT, the football league that rewards players not just for winning games but for losing weight.

There are a number of ways to access the service. If you are a Lincolnshire resident, work in Lincolnshire, or are registered with a Lincolnshire GP, you can self-refer on our website. Alternatively, you can speak to your GP or a member of their healthcare team about getting a supported referral with One You for help with eating well, moving more, losing weight and drinking less.
