The Boston Hanse Big Dig will be happening from April to June 2019. Anyone is welcome, no archaeology experience is needed, however much support you feel you need can be arranged for your session.

Professional archaeologists will be leading the dig and will welcome your participation regardless of your age or level of fitness, and whether you want to dig or to help with washing of any finds and recording them. Book for schools, groups or as an individual, children (under 18) are welcome to join in, but must be supervised by an adult at all times.

The experience is FREE and is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and organised by the Boston Hanse Group. After signing up you will be sent an information pack to guide you throughout your archaeology day. All the tools you need will be provided, just turn up on your booked day in sensible clothes and footwear.

You can book onto both morning (9.30am-12pm) and afternoon (1:00pm – 3:30pm) sessions and can book onto as many as you like. There will also be two open weekends on the 11th and 12th of May and 8th and 9th of June, further details will be released in due course. The area to be excavated is close to the banks of the river Witham, and very close to where the suspected site of the Hanseatic Merchants warehouse would have stood.

The finds will belong to the landowner – Boston Borough Council. It will be up to them to decide what will happen to them in the long term. However, throughout the dig the best finds will be put on display at the Guildhall museum for everyone to see.

There are specific dates for Digging and Geophysics, for more information contact Lydia on 01529 461499 or email lydia.hendry@heritagelincolnshire.org.
