The Boston Hanse Group were honoured to welcome the Worshipful the Mayor of Boston, Cllr Judith Skinner to officially open their Big Dig site last Friday (April 26).

Cllr Judith Skinner, said: “It is a pleasure to be invited here today by the Boston Hanse Group to see how the Big Dig is going. This is an exciting archaeology project brought about by the hard work of the volunteers of the Boston Hanse Group, thank you. I would especially like to mention Mike Peberdy for his part in securing funding from the Heritage Lottery fund and Lincolnshire County Council Community Collaboration Fund for this project.

Boston has a rich and varied past and it is important to discover it, as it can play an important part in shaping the future of our town”.

Meeting the Mayor today were teachers and pupils of Wyberton Primary School who were busy at work cleaning finds and excavating in the first trench. Nathan Shortland a teacher for year 4 said: “The Big Dig provides an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity for children to research local history and take part in a professional archaeological dig.  The enthusiasm of the dig staff and volunteers has fed into the children’s excitement which has led to a richer experience of discovering artefacts and supports the children’s  understanding of what an archaeologist does and what happens at a dig site. We would like to thank the Boston Hanse Group for providing this experience for local schools.”

The Big Dig is open from Tuesday, April 23 to Sunday, June 9, 2019 with two public open weekends on Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12 and Saturday and Sunday. June 8 and 9.  If you are interested in taking part in the Big Dig a few spaces are still remaining, please contact Lydia.hendry@heritagelincolnshire.org to book your place on the dig.
